Dasmariñas City declares state of calamity due to Dengue outbreak

GIVEN a sharp increase in dengue cases, Dasmariñas City in Cavite has been declared in a state of calamity with 928 infections reported as of November 6, 2024—almost four times the 233 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Resolution No. 435-S-2024, which issued the declaration, gives the local government the authority to deploy funds and put policies in place to successfully fight the outbreak.

In order to stop the mosquito-borne virus from spreading further, Mayor Jenny Austria-Barzaga emphasized how urgent it is to handle the situation.

She urged people to stay educated and promote information about preventing dengue. “It is crucial that we take immediate action to stop the spread of the virus,” she said.

Dengue symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Skin rashes
  • Nausea and vomiting

To address the outbreak, the local government is promoting the 5S strategy:

  1. Search and Destroy – Eliminate mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water from containers.
  2. Self-Protection Measures – Wear long sleeves and use insect repellent to protect against mosquito bites.
  3. Seek Early Consultation – Visit a doctor immediately if dengue symptoms appear.
  4. Support Fogging Operations – Participate in mosquito control measures, especially during outbreaks.
  5. Sustain Hydration and Cleanliness – Keep surroundings clean and ensure adequate hydration to stay healthy.
