The amihan, or northeast monsoon season, has started, signifying the start of cooler weather associated with Christmas, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Tuesday.

“Brrr, brrr! The looooong wait is over—it’s finally here! The Amihan season has arrived!” the state weather agency said on Facebook.

According to PAGASA, this was decided by “meteorological patterns” after monitoring that “the high-pressure area over Siberia has strengthened, leading to a strong surge of northeasterly winds.”

The northeast monsoon, also known as “amihan” locally, is forecast to deliver strong northeasterly winds, colder temperatures, and dry air to the country, with occasional surges anticipated in the months to come.

“Episodes of wind and cold temperature surges, as well as increasing prevalence of rough sea conditions, especially over the seaboards of Luzon, are also expected in the coming months,” says PAGASA.

PAGASA added that they would continue to track the weather’s country and climate.
