Typhoon Nika Causes ₱9 Million in Agricultural Damage in Ilagan City

The total initial agricultural damage caused by Typhoon Nika in Ilagan City has reached ₱9,749,400.

City of Ilagan Public Information Officer Paul Bacungan reported that corn fields suffered ₱6.5 million in damages, affecting 246 hectares.

Rice fields sustained nearly ₱2 million in losses, covering 90 hectares.

Additional damage was recorded for banana, soybean, and other high-value crops.

More than 100,000 hectares of agricultural land were affected across the Cagayan Valley due to Typhoon Nika’s impact.

Department of Agriculture Region 2 Regional Executive Director Rose Mary Aquino noted the region had standing crops covering 133,025 hectares of rice before the typhoon hit.

Of these, 90,618 hectares were in the maturity stage, 16,641 hectares in the reproductive stage, and 27,000 hectares newly planted.

The typhoon also impacted 24,112 hectares of standing corn crops and 11,679 hectares of high-value crops.

Isabela, Quirino, and Nueva Vizcaya recorded the most significant crop damage.

The Department of Agriculture Region 2 is yet to finalize the exact cost of damage but expects the losses to add to the ₱298 million in crop damage from Typhoon Marce.
