Typhoon Marce Stalls Near Cagayan Coast, Triggers High Storm Surge and Coastal Warnings

November 6, 2024, 5:00 PM — Typhoon Marce (#Yinxing) has slowed significantly, nearly stationary in position, as it hovers 295 km east of Aparri, Cagayan.

PAGASA’s latest update warns residents across Northern Luzon of the intensifying storm conditions with potential impacts on life and property.

  • Location: 295 km East of Aparri, Cagayan (18.0°N, 124.4°E)
  • Maximum Sustained Winds: 150 km/h
  • Gustiness: Up to 185 km/h
  • Extent of Winds: Reaching up to 680 km from the center

Signal Warnings and Affected Areas:

  • TCWS No. 3 (Storm-force Winds): Northeastern Cagayan, including Santa Ana and Gonzaga, can expect winds between 89-117 km/h with moderate to significant threats to life and property.
  • TCWS No. 2 (Gale-force Winds): Batanes, the rest of Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Northern Isabela, Apayao, Northern Kalinga, parts of Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Northern Ilocos Sur may experience minor to moderate threats with winds of 62-88 km/h.
  • TCWS No. 1 (Strong Winds): Areas in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Northern Pangasinan, and additional regions in Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, and Aurora are warned of winds between 39-61 km/h.

Rainfall and Storm Surge Threats:

Heavy rainfall and significant storm surge remain major concerns. Coastal residents are advised to heed evacuation notices, especially as some areas face surges exceeding 3 meters.

Immediate precautions are urged along coastal stretches of Batanes, Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union.

Hazardous Sea Conditions:

A Gale Warning has been issued for Northern and Central Luzon’s coastal waters, with wave heights expected to reach up to 12 meters near Babuyan Islands and 8 meters around Batanes and Cagayan shores.

Sea travel is highly discouraged as mariners face treacherous conditions across multiple coastal regions.

Forecast Movement:

Typhoon Marce is expected to gradually resume a westward track by November 7, moving through the Babuyan Channel and possibly crossing over Northern Cagayan or Ilocos Norte by Friday morning.

A weakening trend may begin over the weekend as the typhoon interacts with land features and a surging northeasterly wind flow.
