Kanlaon Volcano emitted nearly 3,000 tons of sulfur dioxide on Saturday and recorded 17 volcanic earthquakes today, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Along with the volcanic tremors, Kanlaon also had three ash emission events, and ground deformation was observed at its crater.

In response to the increased activity, Phivolcs raised the volcano’s alert status to Alert Level 2 due to consecutive ash explosions reaching heights of up to 500 meters.

Under Alert Level 2, residents were strongly advised not to enter the four-kilometer permanent danger zone around Kanlaon Volcano due to the possibility of phreatic explosions.

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano’s activity as the risk of eruptions remains high.
