A transport group has welcomed the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) decision to suspend the registration of electronic vehicles (e-vehicles) across the Philippines.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Cauayan, National Public Transportation Coalition (NPTC) Convenor Ariel Lim stated that the LTO’s move is a good decision since the proposal to regulate e-vehicles has not yet been thoroughly studied.

The suspension of e-vehicle registration by the LTO came as the agency deliberates on how to handle the growing number of these vehicles on the road.

Earlier proposals aimed to ensure that e-vehicle drivers would become more responsible in using public roads.

According to Lim, the rise of e-vehicles, similar to the surge in motorcycle usage, could significantly increase the number of vehicles on the roads, potentially affecting other transport sectors.

Lim also noted that the LTO’s initial proposal was aligned with the authority of local government units (LGUs) to regulate e-vehicle registration within their respective jurisdictions.

He added that, without registration, many e-vehicle users might disregard regulations, which could only be controlled through an ordinance issued by the LGUs.
