KORONADAL, South Cotabato – Senator Lito Lapid emphasized the pivotal role of tourism in combating unemployment in the Philippines during an event on October 10.
The senator attended an awarding ceremony for two recipients of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program organized by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) during their national convention.
He was accompanied by his son, Mark Lapid, Chief Operating Officer of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), and Junel Ann Divinagracia, National President of ATOP.
The event highlighted the government’s commitment to utilizing tourism to create jobs and improve livelihoods nationwide.
As the chair of the Senate Committee on Tourism, Senator Lapid expressed his belief that tourism is a vital solution to the unemployment crisis many Filipinos are facing.
He stated, “Tourism can significantly contribute to job creation, providing numerous opportunities for our fellow countrymen who are seeking employment.”
Senator Lapid also pointed out the importance of the “One Town, One Product” initiative, designed to promote local entrepreneurship and showcase unique offerings from various towns.
This initiative not only boosts local economies but also enhances tourism by attracting visitors interested in experiencing local culture and products.
In addition to promoting local products, Senator Lapid is advocating for tourism development in rural areas, as mandated by Republic Act 9593 of 2009.
This legislation aims to improve tourism infrastructure and services in less urbanized regions, ensuring the benefits of tourism reach communities beyond major cities.
“By developing tourism in rural areas, we can create more job opportunities for Filipinos and empower local communities,” he stated.
Senator Lapid’s comments come at a time when the Philippine economy is striving to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted the tourism sector and related industries.
The government aims to revitalize the tourism industry and generate employment by focusing on sustainable tourism practices and promoting local products.
As the country faces ongoing unemployment challenges, Senator Lapid’s vision of tourism as a key driver of job creation presents a promising path forward.
Through collaborative efforts among government agencies, local officials, and the private sector, the Philippines can leverage its rich cultural heritage and natural resources to foster a vibrant tourism industry that benefits all Filipinos.
