Malacañang has confirmed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has accepted the resignation of National Police Commission (Napolcom) Commissioner Edilberto Dela Cruz Leonardo.

This was announced by Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez, citing a letter from Malacañang signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin and addressed to DILG Secretary and National Police Commission Chairman Jonvic Remulla, dated October 8, 2024.

In the letter, Bersamin stated that Leonardo submitted his resignation on October 4, 2024, as the representative of the law enforcement sector in Napolcom.

Leonardo resigned after being implicated in the murder of former PCSO board secretary Wesley Barayuga, according to the findings of the Quadcom investigation in the House of Representatives.

Leonardo was accused by PNP Drug Enforcement Group officer PLtCol. Santi Mendoza of ordering the killing of Barayuga on July 30, 2020.

Mendoza claimed that Leonardo provided the description of Barayuga’s vehicle and license plate, which led to the execution of the murder upon Barayuga’s departure from his office.

Bersamin instructed Remulla to immediately inform Leonardo that the President’s acceptance of his resignation is effective immediately.
