CAUAYAN CITY – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Cagayan is conducting a rapid damage assessment to evaluate the impact of Typhoon Julian, which may lead to the province being placed under a State of Calamity.

The assessment is critical due to the expected extensive damage to agriculture, particularly rice crops and fishponds, caused by the typhoon’s strong winds and heavy rains.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Cauayan, Cagayan PDRRMO officer Rueli Rapsing stated that rainfall has subsided in the province as Typhoon Julian continues to move away. However, significant damage is still anticipated.

According to Rapsing, no additional towns have been affected beyond the 11 municipalities already impacted by the storm. As of the latest reports, 577 families, equivalent to 1,778 individuals, have been evacuated.

Several areas in Cagayan, including Baggao, Sta. Praxedes, Lal-lo, Gataran, and Claveria, faced threats of landslides, while parts of Sta. Teresita, Allacapan, Sta. Ana, and Aparri experienced flooding.

Currently, no major damage has been reported on mainland Cagayan. Authorities are still awaiting reports on the situation in Calayan Island, one of the hardest-hit areas by the typhoon.
