BUTUAN CITY – Alyansa Tigil Mina strongly condemned the shooting and killing of Barangay Puyat Captain Alberto Cuartero, an environmental activist, during a meeting at a restaurant in Madrid, Surigao del Sur.
According to Tel Yprraguerre of Alyansa Tigil Mina in an exclusive interview, Cuartero was an anti-mining advocate dedicated to protecting the environment from harmful mining activities.
The organization expressed deep sorrow over the increasing number of killings targeting anti-mining activists.
Initial reports from the police revealed that the gunman responsible for the deaths of Cuartero and his companion, Ronde Asis, remains unidentified.
Cuartero had been one of the key witnesses in the local government’s case against a mining company in Carmen.
These consecutive killings of environmental activists have made the Philippines the most dangerous country for such advocates, according to a recent survey conducted by international watchdog Global Witness.
