ILOILO CITY — The annual “Artesanias de Iloilo” trade fair opened its doors on September 23, 2024 at Robinsons Place Iloilo, marking the beginning of a week-long celebration of local craftsmanship and entrepreneurship.
With 125 exhibitors participating, this year’s event is the largest in its five-year history.
Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Iloilo, the fair aims to provide a platform for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to showcase their products.
Ma. Dinda Tamayo, Director of DTI-Iloilo, expressed her enthusiasm about the strong start.
“This year we want Artesanias to be unique,” Tamayo said highlighting this year’s innovation theme.
“Artesanias is a reliable medium, a springboard that taught us to appreciate the journeys of our MSMEs, becoming part of their achievements, their hits and misses and become relevant to them. All of you sitting as spectators, we would like to convert you as buyers. Our buyers who support us because you believe in your role as an Ilonggo, you appreciate the craftsmanship of your fellow Ilonggos”, she added.
The fair commenced with a unique opening ceremony called “sandok-bubo,” a water-led ritual symbolizing abundance and prosperity.
The ceremony was led by DTI Region VI Regional Director Rachel Nufable, former Regional Director Ermelinda Pollentes, DTI Iloilo Provincial Director Dinda Tamayo, and representatives from partner agencies, local government units (LGUs), and MSMEs.
This ceremonial pouring of water signified the collective hope for a flourishing trade fair and thriving local businesses.
This year’s fair features an expanded roster of 125 exhibitors, up from 85 in 2023.
Visitors can explore a wide range of products, including bamboo crafts, cacao and coffee products, wearables made from traditional “Hablon” fabric, and various processed foods including Muslim-friendly food.
The fair has set a revenue target of Php3.8 million, following last year’s success which saw sales reach Php3.6 million. Throughout the week, visitors can look forward to a variety of events and demonstrations:
• September 24: Bamboo product competitions and weaving demonstrations
• September 25-26: Seminars on coconut cultivation and Halal certification
• September 27: Hablon weaving pattern competition and craft demonstrations
• September 28-29: Coffee and tablea brewing workshops
The DTI Regional Office for Western Visayas, led by Regional Director Rachel Nufable, has thrown its full support behind the trade fair.
RD Nufable stated, “By showcasing the best of Ilonggo craftsmanship and innovation, we’re not just promoting local products, but also fostering economic growth and preserving our rich cultural heritage.”
The Artesanias de Iloilo Trade Fair runs until September 29 and is open to the public during mall hours.
With its focus on local products and embrace of modern technology, the event represents a blend of tradition and innovation that characterizes Iloilo’s approach to economic development.
