A new vessel deployed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has begun patrol operations in Escoda Shoal, replacing the BRP Teresa Magbanua, PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo confirmed.
While the identity of the replacement ship remains undisclosed, it has already conducted multiple patrols around the shoal.
According to Balilo, continuous patrol operations will be carried out to ensure the security of Escoda Shoal.
The deployment follows reports of several Chinese vessels gathering near the shoal, seemingly waiting for the replacement of the Magbanua.
The replacement vessel reportedly turned off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder as it approached the shoal, ensuring its discreet entry into the area.
Previously, National Maritime Council spokesperson Vice Admiral Alexander Lopez announced that the government would no longer disclose details of vessels deployed in contested areas to prevent China from anticipating and blocking the country’s movements.
