Cauayan City is highlighting the weaving of traditional garments by Indigenous People (IP) as part of the city’s celebration of Indigenous People’s Month this coming October.

The Cauayan Weavers and Beaders Association has been working hard to preserve the cultural heritage of the Ga’dang people through the creation of traditional clothing.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Cauayan, Councilor Jong Gapasin, Indigenous Peoples Representative, shared that while the Indigenous People have adapted to modern living, they hope to maintain the tradition of wearing their cultural attire, at least during important events.

With over 14,000 IP individuals in the city, few still actively preserve their native language and traditional garments. This has prompted the revival of the weaving tradition in Cauayan.

The Cauayan Weaving Center has been operating for a year, offering indigenous individuals the opportunity to purchase traditional clothing and learn the art of weaving.

There’s no longer a need to travel to Mountain Province for weaving lessons, as the center is open to everyone who wishes to learn.

Cauayan-made garments have also been showcased in various competitions, proudly representing the city’s rich cultural heritage.
