The influx of Indian oil sardines in Concepcion, Iloilo, is being hailed as a positive sign by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Remia Aparri, Director of BFAR Region 6, explained that the increase in sardine numbers indicates a “healthy” marine environment in the area.

However, Aparri noted that this abundance of fish presents a significant challenge for the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Concepcion in managing the “oversupply” of sardines.

BFAR is planning to conduct a feasibility study to establish a processing plant in the region.

Aparri emphasized that while such surges are not frequent, they occur annually in the municipality.

The director also highlighted the importance of preserving the sardines through post-processing to ensure that they can be utilized when supply levels decline.
