The National Maritime Council (NMC) has assured that the Philippine government will sustain its presence in Escoda Shoal, located in the West Philippine Sea, after the withdrawal of BRP Teresa Magbanua from the area.

According to NMC Spokesperson retired Vice Admiral Alexander Lopez, government monitoring will continue in the area, documenting illegal activities by China.

Lopez did not specify the vessel deployed to replace BRP Teresa Magbanua, which is undergoing repairs after being damaged by a collision with a China Coast Guard vessel.

Lopez emphasized that the incident at Scarborough Shoal, which was occupied by China, served as a valuable lesson for the Philippines.

He added that the government is committed to maintaining its presence in the area to assert the country’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction.

Escoda Shoal is part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) under the 1982 UNCLOS.

Meanwhile, the BRP Teresa Magbanua has arrived in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, for repairs. Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan reported that the crew members who suffered from dehydration and stomach issues are now in stable condition.

Gavan also assured the public that the PCG will continue its mandate to protect the country’s territorial waters, especially in Escoda Shoal.
