Kabankalan City has unveiled its presentation for the ambitious “Flood-Free Kabankalan City” initiative.
Mayor Benjie Miranda of Kabankalan City shared in an interview with Bombo Radyo Bacolod that the Task Force Baha has been convened to address the persistent flooding issues in the city. The mayor explained that flooding has been a long-standing problem, exacerbated by typhoons or even minor weather disturbances, particularly affecting the poblacion area.
The mayor noted that while Kabankalan City is considered a central hub in the Negros Island Region, frequent flooding during heavy rains diminishes its potential. The floods cause billions of pesos in damage to crops, property, and vehicles.
The plan aims to address flooding by deepening the shallow rivers and clearing water channels. Additionally, improvements to the drainage systems are part of the strategy.
Mayor Miranda acknowledged that the presentation is only the initial phase and that no budget has yet been allocated. However, the local government unit hopes to demonstrate initiative to the National Government, seeking support and additional funding for the program.
