Pope Francis has called on the government of Timor-Leste to protect children from all forms of abuse.

This message was conveyed upon his arrival in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste. The Pope’s appeal urged the people to take every measure to prevent any kind of abuse, ensuring that children are granted a peaceful life.

Although no direct mention was made, it is noteworthy that during the 1980s and 1990s, some prominent bishops in East Timor were accused of abusing minors.

Pope Francis is also expected to meet with abuse victims during his visit.

Timor-Leste, being the only Catholic-majority country on the Pope’s 12-day Asia-Pacific tour, is set to welcome approximately 700,000 people—more than half of the country’s population—to attend his mass today.
